June 8, 2022Remember all those times you’ve reached your front door only to spend the next few minutes fumbling around for your keys? It’s frustrating and it happens to us all. But if you’re looking for easier ways to get in and out of your home, you might want to buy a digital lock / smart lock.
These locks allow you to unlock doors with a touch of your unique fingerprint or from anywhere through an app on your phone. While smart locks won’t necessarily make your home any safer, they do allow for more control and efficiency. Not only will they make sure you never again have to drop everything in your hands to look for keys, but smart locks can lock and unlock your door from anywhere and extend digital “keys” to friends, family, caregivers or anyone else who regularly visit your home.
That said, not all smart locks are the same. There are various functions available in the locks to unlock the door & features which we can use that we could never imagine a door lock could perform. And we are here to guide you on the right selection. Few ways to unlock the door are as follows:
- Registered Fingerprints unlock the door instantly
- Pin Number unlocks the door
- RFID Cards can be shown at the reader
- Mechanical Key Override option for emergency opening
- Bluetooth pairing with phone & unlocking from app
- Wifi Enabled locks allow unlocking from phone from anywhere you are
- Locks can be combined with Video Door Phones / Home Automation Systems to unlock the door from the phone or from the Video Door Phone Device
- Remote Control options enable to unlock the door from the vicinity in your house
Another general concern is battery life, but this will vary significantly (for all smart locks) based on how much you lock or unlock your door. Battery power shouldn’t deter you from buying a smart lock you love, though, because these locks need the regular battery cells available in the market & last for atleast 8-12 months. When the battery is going low, the lock device will give low battery alert every time you unlock the door so it gives you enough days / weeks to replace the batter. In fact, almost all keyless smart locks now include a pair of jumpstart nodes on the bottom of the lock. Grab a 9V battery and connect it to the nodes for just enough power to enter your keypad code and unlock the lock.
With smart locks, it’s really all about adding a small convenience to your daily life. They can make getting into your house easier when your arms are full and your keys are out of reach. They can also save you a trip the keymaker to have a key made for a new roommate / family member / lost keys / or having to rush home on your lunch break to let in a service professional.
In the end, there’s no right answer in terms of the model you should buy, but considering your usage and application, what connection method lines up with your smart home, and what, if any, third-party devices you’d like your lock to work with — will help you narrow down your options so you can quickly find the right smart lock for you.
