Sliding Folding Shower Cubicle
October 19, 2026One fixed panel. Three massive sliding doors. No bottom guide.
Some architectural requirements cannot be solved with standard hardware. They require a mechanism designed around the space, its structural limitations and the way people will use it.
At a premium landmark building in South Mumbai, one such challenge was creating a large sliding partition to separate the lobby from the banquet area, without disrupting the flooring or compromising the smooth operation of the doors.
The Challenge: Moving Doors at an Unusual Scale
The opening measured approximately 30 feet in width and 14 feet in height. The proposed solution consisted of one fixed panel and three sliding doors positioned behind it.
Each sliding door measured approximately 7 feet wide and 14 feet high, with a weight capacity of 300 kg.
At this scale, the challenge went beyond simply installing a sliding mechanism. The system needed to support exceptionally large panels while maintaining stability, alignment and ease of movement.
There was another important requirement. The client did not want a bottom guide because it would interrupt the continuity of the flooring.
The Solution: A Top-Hung Sliding System
The solution was a custom-engineered, top-hung sliding system that allowed the doors to move without a bottom guide.
With the sliding mechanism supported by the top tracks, the floor remained free of a bottom guiding channel. This helped preserve the uninterrupted appearance of the flooring while allowing the doors to slide behind the fixed panel.
However, suspending doors of this size and weight required careful engineering.
The Engineering Behind the Movement
Large sliding panels need more than a strong track. The panels and their supporting structure must be designed to handle the loads involved, while the mechanism must continue to operate smoothly.
For this installation, considerable attention went into strengthening the panels and engineering their suspension from the top tracks.
The objective was to achieve two things simultaneously: safely support the heavy doors and maintain effortless movement.
The result is a system where the doors can be moved with one hand, despite their considerable size, and slide neatly behind the fixed panel.
Separating Spaces Without Interrupting the Design
The completed installation allows the lobby and banquet area to function as separate spaces when required, while providing a seamless sliding solution that respects the flooring and the scale of the architecture.
For projects involving oversized sliding panels, details such as panel dimensions, weight, track support and floor conditions can significantly influence the choice of mechanism. Addressing these requirements early helps ensure that the final installation works as intended, both visually and functionally.
