How To Clean Tarnished Metal Door Handles Today

Home owners & Interior Designers often notice that their metal door handles may get tarnished and look a bit unsightly from time to time. Most solid brass is finished with a lacquer to prevent tarnishing, but eventually, that lacquer can wear down, and unlacquered brass is much more likely to tarnish than lacquered brass. While it may look unsightly, it’s actually a way for the brass to fight off further damage. Tarnishing is the result of oxidation. Oxidation is a chemical process a material undergoes when exposed to air. So, without any other factors, everything undergoes oxidization, even our bodies. While it may not seem like exposure to the air around us could change anything, over time, signs of oxidization become more apparent. Many clients often ask us the right way to maintain their door hardware products.

The very aspect of tarnish is taken from the ancient meaning for everything darkens. It is in a sense the corrosion of something that is made of metal. The surface of the metal dulls and it loses its shine. This makes for a messy look on the door handles. This can happen with brass, aluminium, stainless steel, and copper. The look of their door handles can become unsightly and they want to regain what once looked awesome for them. Tarnish happens with the metal reacting to the air around it.

How To Remove Tarnish from Brass & Copper Handles

Each metal requires a different way of removing the tarnish so that the door handle can retain the way that it looked when it was new. For Brass & Copper.

Handles, the simplest process that a person can do to be sure that it will look new again, is to take a bowl and put 1 tablespoon of vinegar, flour, and salt in it. Mix this up thoroughly. It will turn into a paste that will then be applied to the door handle. Let it remain for a few minutes & then wash it off thoroughly. Once it is dried it should be buffed for the shine that it had when it was new. You can buff the door handle at the end of the process with a soft cloth.

(Please note that this is applicable only for Plain Brass Handles & not for Zinc Alloys or different colours of electroplating coated on the brass base)

People love when their door handles & knobs look as good as new and they will when they complete this process.

Taking good care of the door handles will allow a home to look as lovely as it can at all times.
